James Garfield was the 20th President of the United States, serving from March 4, 1881, until his assassination on September 19, 1881. He was a lawyer and a Union general during the American Civil War before becoming involved in politics. His presidency was cut short when he was shot by an assassin just four months into his term and he died from complications of his injuries.
