George Washington and John J. "Blackjack" Pershing, their tiles are "General of the Armies" and both were promoted to the grade posthumously
More info...The titles "General of the Armies" and "Admiral of the Navy" were deemed to have represented a grade higher than five stars, but there has never officially been a six star designation. Five stars is the highest grade in any of the US armed forces. The only 5 star generals are General of the Army MacArthur, and General of the Army Eisenhower.
Colonels, one-star brigadier generals, two-star major generals, and the only three star lieutenant general, Grant, were all paid the same - $300 per month.
There are currently 40 active duty officers of 4 star rank (generals & admirals) in U.S. Forces. There appear to be well over 200 living retired 4 star generals.
As of now, the United States does not have any active six-star generals. The rank of six-star general is not currently utilized and has only been bestowed historically upon a few individuals, such as George Washington, who was posthumously promoted to this rank in 1976 to honor his leadership during the American Revolutionary War. The highest active rank in the U.S. military is a four-star general. Other countries may have similar ranks, but they are not commonly in use today.
As of 2005 the armed forces released there were currently 86 "Major Generals" (2 star). However specific names are generally withheld outside of 4-5 star generals for security purposes.
