Jefferson on the NickelThe front (obverse) of the nickel features various portraits of Thomas Jefferson, the third President of the United States of America and the principal author of the Declaration of Independence.

From 1938 to 2004 the portrait was a leftward-facing profile.

In 2005 a special Westward Journey portrait was used, with a partial image of Jefferson facing to the right.

In 2006, the portrait on the obverse was changed to a new image of Jefferson, caught with head turned just left of center.

Before JeffersonPrior to Jefferson's portrait appearing in 1938, the US nickel showed an image of a Native American, or "Indian." That design was preceded by various stylized portraits of Lady Liberty.

There have 3 regular issues of 5 cent coins with faces on them produced by the U.S. Mint. The first was the Liberty Nickel produced from 1885 through 1912 and the face was that of Lady Liberty. The second was the Indian Head Nickel, sometimes called the Buffalo Nickel, produced from 1913 through 1938 and the face was a composite of 3 different persons; Iron Tail who was an Oglala Souix chief, Two Moons who was a Cheyenne chief and Big Tree who was a Kiowa chief. The third is the Jefferson Nickel produced from 1938 through the present date and the face is that of Thomas Jefferson although in recent years different poses have been used.
