Until recent decades it had not been believed that a woman could lead a country as well as a man could. Prior to the development of feminism, the prevailing social attitude was that (to quote) a woman's place is in the home. Women were thought to be suited by their Biology only to bear and raise children.
At the present time it would be possible for a woman to be elected President, and Hillary Clinton had a very good chance at the Presidency in the 2008 election. The only reason why she did not win was that Obama proved to be more popular. However, there could easily be a woman President in the near future. The Republican Party may run Sarah Palin as their candidate in 2012, and she could win. Conceivably, the race might come down to Sarah Palin vs. Hillary Clinton, in which case there would be a woman President no matter which candidate won.
