Lincoln's mother died when he was nine. I can not imagine that her death had any direct influence on his decision to run for President. He ran because he had made a campaign for the Senate which attracted national attention because of his debates with his opponent Stephan Douglas. BY participating in these debates and he perhaps accidentally laid the groundwork for a presidential campaign.
