President Abraham Lincoln was shot by John Wilkes Booth while Lincoln was watching a play with his wife Mary. He died on April 15, 1865, just 5 weeks into his second term.

Booth, an actor by profession, was sympathetic to the South, and although the Civil War was essentially over, conspired with others to kill Lincoln and other high federal officials. They may have thought to influence Union policies (although the Congress was even more radical by 1865) or sought revenge for the destruction within the Confederacy.
