Why did Jefferson and Madison help to write the Kentucky and Virginia Resolutions?

Jefferson was a believer in states' rights. Because the Kentucky and Virginia Resolutions created the idea of nullification, or that states did not have to follow federal law, it follows that Jefferson would support them.

Because at this point in time, some states felt that it was unfair that if they did not like laws they still had to follow them. So, the president wanted to show them wrong, and tell them that they still had freedoms. But in the long run it just ended up a big mess, which started the Nullification Crisis of 1842. But, they had a good purpose in starting this law because if Virginia or Kentucky did not like the laws, they could ignore them and go about their merry way.
