The Purpose of National Parks is to provide for "future generations" the benefit and enjoyment of Natural Resources. These delicate resources, (which come in many forms), require management and foresight. National Parks provide such management and foresight.

President Ulysses S. Grant signed the bill creating Yellowstone as the world's first national park in 1872. The National Park Service was created in 1916 during the Woodrow Wilson administration.
Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge was the first one in 1903.
