As 1908 approached he began to have second thoughts and was reluctant to give up the Presidency, but did so. By 1912, he was even more sure that he could do a better job than President Taft and tried to get the Republican nomination. After he failed at that, he formed his own party in order to run anyway, against both Taft and the Democrat, Wilson.
