The color red helps to preserve a persons 'night vision'. If white light were used and a soldier heard something and tried to look out into the darkness, he couldn't see much.
true but not totally true. red still makes most colors visible to the eye more-so than other colors and it has the least amount of ambient light so the soldier cant be detected while reading a map by the light reflecting off of it. red also doesnt travel as far of a distance than other colors so the enemy cant see it far away or even fairly close up. finally red is just the best color to use at night because you can still see ahead of you (not far) but someone else wouldn't see the light unless they accually saw the bulb itself, the ambient light (excess light emitted which is unused and not in the focused beam) cant be seen at all at night over a certain distance too.
hoped that helps
Red flashlights are typically used for preserving night vision in low-light conditions, such as stargazing, hunting, or military operations.
Flashlights exist so you can have a portable light source. You can use flashlights where there are no other types of lights. You can use them in emergencies, and you can use them in places where other types of lights would be awkward or hazardous.
People use flashlights when they are in need of a light source. If the power goes out at night, the use of a flashlight is essential to get around the house. Flashlights can also be used in emergency situations outside of the house.
They can.
I have heard of the surefire L2 being issued to troops.
Flashlights have red lights because red light is less likely to disrupt night vision compared to white light. This makes it easier to see in the dark without losing your ability to see in low light conditions.
LED bulbs tend to be very bright and use far less power to operate making them perfect for flashlights. Halogen bulbs are also very bright and used in flashlights.
Flashlights, larger toys
A small, portable light source.
Candles, torches etc
"Red lights are used in photography dark rooms, military bunkers, submarines, and anywhere you might find yourself working in the dark. It gives you light to see, while at the same time keeping your eyes adjusted for the dark."from Great Outdoors website.
Streamlight flashlights are made for public safety officers such as firefighters, police officers and military personnel. They are brighter than a conventional flashlight and can cut through smoke, helping a firefighter to see in a burning building.
