Why does the us president sign a bill with several pens?

When the President signs a bill, they usually use a new pen that is only used for that bill, and sometimes engraved just for that purpose. Often it gets given away, usually to someone who was significant in the creation or instigation of the bill, or who is otherwise symbolicly related to the bill.

It was my understanding, the pens are used for specific words or letters to authenticate the document with different inks, and ball points. This is to thwart of any duplications or fraud. This information was obtained through a history teacher I had in high school.

Often the president will give away the pens or pens he uses to sign a piece of legislation into law. Occasionally a president will sign a piece of his name with a pen and sign the next piece of his name with another pen and so on. This way, he can give all of his supporters the "pen that signed the paper" so to speak. If 60 senators voted for a bill the president really wanted, the president may sign the bill using 60 different pens so each senator will get one.
