He got his first real guitar at the age of 14. His mother purchased it for him at the five-in-dime. He loved playing guitar very much and he said sometimes he played until his fingers bled. He started a band with some guys from his school Jimmy Foster and Jody Smith. They struggled to book performances. Over time Jimmy quit the band and Jody got married. He started his career afterwards. He was quoted as saying "Those were the best days of my life"
