This is what the constitution that was agreed upon by all the states says.
The reason for having the trial in the Senate and requiring a 2/3 vote to impeach
is probably to make it hard to remove a president on a whim or some sudden tide of
unpopularity.
In the Senate House
The Chairman of the Judiciary Committee in the House of Representatives starts impeachment proceedings. An impeachment trial is then held.
It is the House of Representatives that has the power to impeach a president. His or her trial is then held in the United States Senate.
Impeachment starts in the House, but the hearings are held in the Senate.
Trials take place in federal courts. Trials for impeachment are held in the US Senate.
The trial was held in the Senate chamber of the US Capitol building in Washington, DC.
Yes, that power is specifically delegated to the US Senate by the Constitution.Only the House of Representatives can initiate impeachment proceedings; the Senate conducts the removal trial.
During an impeachment, the House of Representatives debates the case for impeachment and if there is enough evidence, passes a Bill of Impeachment. After the president is impeached, then a trial will be held in the Congress. The House presents the evidence supporting impeachment, and the Senate acts as a jury. If the Senate convicts, then the President would be removed from office. Two presidents have been impeached; Andrew Johnson and Bill Clinton. Neither were convicted by the Senate or removed from office.
impeachment
The indictment is brought by the House and the trial is held in the Senate.
After the House of Representatives has voted to impeach a president, the actual trial is conducted by certain members of the House chosen by that body to act as the prosecutor in much the same way that a prosecutor or district attorney conducts trials against people accused of a crime. The Senate serves as the jury in the trial and the Chief Justice of the US serves as the judge who presides over the trial.
In the Senate. The link below has a picture of the Senate at the impeachment trial of President Clinton (you can also see that the Senate is being presided over by Chief Justice Rehnquist--he is easy to recognize because of the stripes on his black judicial robe).
