One would hope that the best candidate would always be elected by a well-informed, thoughtful electorate. The best possible President is more likely to make wise decsions and avoid costly blunders. However, the President is just one part of government. There is a Congress with two houses that has a say in vitually every decision and does as much as the President to shape the government and forward policy. The Supreme Court, which is appointed by the President and Congress, is most important in some ways, since they can throw out laws and come up with bizarre interpretations of the Constitution.
Bottom line - all that can expected is that the electorate, including parents,will study the candidates before voting and will think past their personal welfare to consider the country as a whole. Although it cannot be proven, there is a belief that the common consensus provides the best path for government if it left alone and given a fair chance to operate without manipulation by special interest groups.

There is no reason why they wouldn't like him. By most accounts from people who have met him and his wife Michelle, they are very friendly to kids. But sadly, some parents teach their kids to dislike the president because they didn't vote for him. Kids are innocent and don't know about politics, so ideally, they should be taught to respect the president, whoever it is, and not be given their parents' personal dislike of the person in the White House. Thus, the only kids who don't like the president are probably the kids who were taught to dislike him.

Some young minority kids are probably very pleased that the president is someone with the same skin color as they have, but again, there is no evidence kids analyze what color a president ought to be. That said, unfortunately, some parents seem to feel the need to impose their own political views on their kids, such that the kids are expressing what the parents think of Mr. Obama. In the ideal universe, parents would not teach their kids to love or to hate the president; rather, they should teach their kids to respect him because he is the leader of our country. Kids will have plenty of time when they get older to decide if he was a good president or a bad president. For now, it seems to me that allowing kids to be innocent of partisan attitudes is probably for the best.
