"Confucius" is a Latinized version of Confucius' honorific title, Kong Fuzi, which literally means "Teacher Kong," or "Empty teacher." ("Kong" is a surname, while ''Fuzi" means "Teacher" or "Pedant.") This is usually interpreted as "Master Kong," since Confucius' personal name was å, "Kong." Sixteenth-Century Jesuit missionaries to China (thought specifically to have been Matteo Ricci), upon encountering Master Kong, coined his name that is now widely accepted by the Western world, Confucius.
