The U.S. Marines conducted a surprise amphibious landing in Inchon(Incheon)
marines
this is basic MC JROTC knowledge! The first amphibious landing by Marines was at Providence island in the Bahamas.
The basic role of the Marine is amphibious assault on foreign shores. They provide ground forces that are delivered and supported by the Navy. Today Marines have their own air wings and can be landed through amphibious means or by helicopter.
Oddly, US Marines were not used in the amphibious landings in the Mediterranean, Sicily, Italy, Normandy nor Southern France. And for most of the Pacific amphibious landings, the Marines were used most of the time and not the US Army. Kinda odd.
Montford Point in North Carolina saw more than 20,000 African Americans trained in segregated facilities between 1942 and 1949. These Black men became the nation's first African American Americans to serve in the United States Marine Corps. The Marine Corps had previously refused to recruit Blacks into the Marines. Roosevelt's Fair Employment Practices Commission in 1941 forced the Corps, despite objections, to begin recruiting African American Marines in 1942. Montford Point continued to train Blacks until 1949, when training segregation ended.
At Montford Point, North Carolina. This was a segregated area within the New River Marine Base (Camp Lejeune), near Jacksonville, in eastern NC.
Although the skills of amphibious landings is what the US Marines are renown for, they can also be inserted by air through helicopters . Also, they have fought extended land campaigns in Korea, Viet Nam, and most recently in Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan.
