For many decades coin dies were prepared without mint marks and then shipped to each mint. There an engraver hand-punched that mint's letter into the dies, so there was a lot of opportunity for variation.

Some collectors pay a bit extra for coins with off-center mint marks but they aren't worth large premiums by themselves. I do remember seeing a set that consisted of cents with mint marks off-center in all 4 directions, mounted around a coin with a properly-aligned letter. That was pretty interesting and did sell for ten or fifteen bucks.
