The North never had slavery.
1808
The south was the slaveholding section, though there were still a few slaves in the north. Slavery had once been legal in all the states. But the south was not fighting FOR slavery. Most Confederate soldiers did not own slaves. Slaves were expensive. Think about it - would you go fight, and fight hard, for years, just so some rich man could keep his slaves? And the north was not fighting against slavery, at least not at first. The north was fighting to "preserve the Union", which the southern states wanted out of. The southerners were fighting for their independence. Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation came after a year and a half of war, and changed the war into one which we look back on today as "for" or "against" slavery.
By 1861, it is clear that most people in the Northern non slave US States believe that slavery is immoral. By the same year many not most, of the people in the Southern States believe that slavery is not immoral.
Sojourner Truth escaped slavery in the year 1826
Following Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation, Congress went to work adding the Thirteenth Amendment to the Constitution. The Senate passed the Amendment on April 8, 1864, the House of Representatives ratified it January 31, 1865 and it was adopted as law December 6, 1865.

The Union, or the North, was fighting to end slavery. ~13 Year Old <3
In 1776, several states in the northern United States began to take steps toward abolishing slavery, but none had completely outlawed it by that year. However, states like Pennsylvania and Vermont passed gradual emancipation laws shortly after, with Vermont declaring itself a free state in its 1777 constitution. Overall, the movement toward abolition started gaining momentum in the late 18th century, but complete outlawing of slavery in states did not occur until later.
