The first practical Union ironclad was the USS Monitor. While the Monitor carried only two guns, they were superior to the fixed broadsides of the Confederate CSS Virginia (the original name of the ship was "Merrimac", which is how the ship is widely known) because the Monitor's guns were in a rotating turret which could be aimed in any direction. The fixed cannon of the Virginia could be turned only slightly; in order to turn the guns, they needed to turn the ship.
The greatest advantage was that the North had a large manufacturing base. This gave them the ability to make ships, cannon, rifles, uniforms, ammunition and the million other things needed by a military force. The South was mainly agricultural, and had a very small manufacturing capability.
Guns.
The last known owner of Jesse James' guns was a man named Bob Bidwell. Mr. Bidwell received the guns after a will dispute where the guns and the spurs were separated. My family currently is in possession of the spurs. Mr. Bidwell on the other hand got the guns. Apparently the gun was described to me by my grandfather who said it had notches in the handle. I have seen the spurs and they are in excellent condition. One of them still has the leather.
Cannon.
A cannon or howitzer are names for large guns.
Depending on when in the 1300s, either none (before the invention of guns) or very crude cannon. The earliest looked a bit like a large, short metal vase, Probably made of brass or bronze. The very early cannon used large arrows as a projectile.
