Yes , and still do. A lot of rural white Americans also eat snapping turtles. They say each part of it has different tasting meat. Some like ham, some like beef etc. I have been offered some, but I'm not very gastronomically adventurous, though I did have a bite of rattlesnake once . Besides , I like turtles.
