Abraham Lincoln was elected in November 1860, and inaugurated in March 1861. The bombardment of Fort Sumter occurred April 12, 1861.
First, they hoped that Britain and France would grant them recognition and send military aid. When Lincoln forestalled this by issuing the Emancipation Proclamation, (making the war look like a crusade against slavery), they hoped that the North would simply become war-weary and vote Lincoln out in the '64 election.

Johnson, who took office after Lincoln's death, was the only Southern senator not to leave office upon secession. Lincoln had put him on the presidential ticket as a symbol of unity, but Johnson was a southern Democrat who was not sympathetic to Lincoln's Republican Party or to helping the newly-freed slaves. Before Lincoln died, He told his acquaintances, "For once in my life as President, I find myself in a position to give everybody something!"

Lincoln was not an abolitionist. He believed the US Constitution allowed slavery. It would be a long time before 3/4 of the states could ratify an amendment to outlaw it and some means could no doubt be worked out to end it voluntarily before that would happen.
