Most of the schools provided for natives had the government sanctioned goal of separating them from their culture, their religion, their families, their language and even their names to turn them into almost Europeans. At Canadian residential schools there were strict rules against doing "native" things.

They white people tried everything they could to "Civilize" the Native Americans. They washed their mouths out with soap, they brutally tortured them if they spoke of their religion or in their native tongue. They did everything they could to break them. in the end, they couldn't "Civilized" them all. The Dine' (Navajo) is one example. they did this to us, but we prevailed and we are now 275,000 plus strong. we still have our language, culture, religions, traditions, our way of life. We are still proud. The sad part is small babies, children were murdered or never to be seen again.
