Another answer: Before the United States established standardized currency, various banks could issue their own currency. A few banks issued 3 dollar bills. Those were called in when the Federal Government began issuing its own currency. A few were not turned in and still exist.

The $500 bill does not exist any more in Canada. Canada and many other countries have discontinued printing bills over $100 due to the fact that large denominations are easy to smuggle.
