Yes. Members of the Seward family still live in Central New York. The closest relatives to Mr. Seward today are his great-great-grandchildren. They and their families live throughout the country. Those living locally are actively helping the museum through volunteering and sharing family stories that allow staff members to give visitors a better understanding of the family.

Was William Seward killed?

No. When John Wilkes Booth was murdering Abraham Lincoln on April 14, 1865, his accomplice Lewis Powell (alias Payne or Paine) was sent to murder Seward. Seward had been in a carriage accident a few weeks before broken his jaw, so he had a metal brace on it to heal. When Powell broke into Seward's home and went to kill the bed-ridden Seward, the brace prevented Powell from striking any major veins. So, even though Seward was stabbed, he wasn't killed. Seward died seven years later, on October 10, 1872.

Is Donaldson a slave name?

While some people named Donaldson may have obtained the name because an ancestor was a slave of someone named Donaldson, it is not possible to say as a general rule that this or any other surname is strictly "a slave name" because all are used by descendants of former slaves and by descendants of people who never were slaves.

What caused the 'Harrying of the North?

The Harrying of the North (Harrowing of the North) is basically the destruction of the North. This happened because around 1069 William the Conqueror introduced taxes to the Kingdom of England. The people of the North (of Saxon and Viking ancestry) could not afford to be paying the taxes and didn't want to be paying them therefore they began to rebel against William. As a leader, King William II could not afford any rebellions, especially with them being the closest descendants to the previous Vikings and Saxons that owned the Kingdom before he did. William knew that in order to keep control of England he had to have no rebels and had to set an example to those who dare disobey him, resulting in the Harrying. William sent soldiers North to destroy all in the area, people guilty and innocent of rebelling were murdered by the sword of Williams soldiers, land was burnt so no crops could grow for some time after and livestock was killed so those that survived died of famine. This was the beginning of Alan (The Red) Rufus' watch over Yorkshire as his loyalty to William throughout his reign and the Harrying meant that he received the Honour of Richmond. Hope this helped. ;)

Are there any living relatives of Abraham Lincoln?

Abraham Lincoln has no direct descendants. Of his four children, only Robert lived to adulthood. Robert had three children, two daughters that did not marry, and a son Abraham Lincoln II, who died as an young adult. Robert's last living daughter died in 1948. However, living in the U.S. there are numerous descendants of Abraham's grandfather, that is from Abraham's blood uncles, aunts, and cousins. So, no direct descendants, but many blood relatives. Robert Todd Lincoln "BUD" Beckwith was Abraham Lincoln's last known direct descendant; he was Lincoln's great-grandson. He was born in Riverside, Illinois on July 19, 1904, and died on December 24, 1985 in Middlesex Co., VA. He did not have any children. He had an older sister, Mary, who was born in 1898, and died in 1975. "Bud" and Mary's parents were Jessie Lincoln (Beckwith) and Warren Beckwith. Jessie Lincoln Beckwith was the daughter of Robert Todd "Bob" Lincoln, the only one of Abraham Lincoln's four sons, to survive past the age of 18. Abraham Lincoln most certainly has surviving cousins, who are currently living. Tom Hanks, the actor, is said to be a distant cousin of Lincoln's, related through Lincoln's mother, Nancy Hanks (Lincoln).
