Many hawks were veterans from either the Korean War, WWII, or men who were just simply veterans of the US armed forces. These men had served their country, and really couldn't see what all the complaining was about. The hawks would say, "we fought the Germans, the Japanese, the North Koreans, the Red Chinese, and we whipped them all, these guys ain't any different...we've got better weapons now, so let's get the job done!" The Dove's said, "...there's got to be another way...a more peaceful way..." (Not realizing that the peaceful ways had already been tried & were answered with bullets! e.g. The definition of war "is the obtaining of a political goal (peacefully), by other than political ways (by force of arms)" The true conscientious objector was a "man of the cloth", or a man in the clergy. The military had much need of chaplin service personnel, medical personnel, food service personnel, all of which a conscientious objector could fulfill. This particular "title" caught on quick with the draft dodgers, and became so wide spread, that it got to the point where the government had to relax the standards for conscientious objectors (make it easier for men to qualify). For the US Marines, Sailors, Airman, Soldiers, and Coast Guardsmen; they were drafted (or going to be). They knew their point of view meant nothing, to either correct, or help the situation they were in (being the military). So they just did their duty as best as they could, and then honorably discharged when their time was up.
