I think the word is Freeman. I am in the UK and this term started here after the black death and the Peasants revolt caused a shortage of labour. Remember slavery was abolished in the British Empire many years before in the old American colonies. The retired freed slaves did not do very well in America until the 1960s when laws gave them more rights. Perhaps the George Floyd will increase their rights.
