The American response to the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor was to recognize that they were at war with the Empire of Japan. This caused them repair the damage of the attack, build up their armed forces, resist Japanese forces in the western Pacific, and, with allies, defeat the Japanese armed forces and to occupy Japan.
A more general and long-term response, better called a lesson learned, was to always be on the alert against attack, and never to assume that just because we take Sunday off, an enemy would too.
The Imperial Japanese Navy made its attack on Pearl Harbor on the morning of December 7, 1941. The surprise attack on Pearl Harbor, Oahu, Hawaii, was aimed at the Pacific Fleet of the United States Navy and its defending Army Air Corps and Marine defensive squadrons. The U.S. public was angered by the attack and rallied in support of the Armed Forces and the US Government's decision to enter World War II, initially against Imperial Japan. The attack severely damaged or destroyed twelve American warships, destroyed 188 aircraft, and killed 2,403 American servicemen and 68 civilians. However, the Pacific Fleet's three aircraft carriers were not in port and so were undamaged, as were the base's vital oil tank farms, submarine pens, and machine shops. Using these resources, the United States was able to rebound within a year. This attack has also been called the bombing of Pearl Harbor and the Battle of Pearl Harbor but, most commonly, the attack on Pearl Harbor or simply Pearl Harbor.
Before Pearl Harbor, they responded with oil embargoes against Japan and froze Japanese assets in the U.S. and England, and supplied Chinese leader Generalissimo Chiang Kai-Shek with weapons to fight the invading Japanese army. Also, they moved the Pacific Fleet from San Francisco to Pearl Harbor, opening the way for the very much failed Pearl Harbor attack.failed because they left the submarines untouched in the attack, and thanks to some luck on the part of America, their three aircraft carriers were all somewhere else at the moment, all of which would prove to be vital later in the war. Also, they didn't destroy the dry docks and massive amount of oil stored here, so they were able to repair and supply their fleet, and by six months the Pacific Fleet was back to full power, with only 2 of 8 battleships permanently sunk. After Pearl Harbor we declared war on them and defeated them at Coral Sea and Midway, and started the long, bloody island hopping invasion across the Pacific at Guadalcanal.ending with the Atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
FDR placed and embargo on oil on Japan, froze all Japanese assets, and placed all American forces in the far east under General Douglas MacArthur's command
