During the American Revolutionary Period, the colonists organized resistance to British control in numerous ways. Before the outbreak of actual hostilities, they collected and stored arms, made plans for mobilization, and wrote then circulated documents which drummed up patriotic fervor while also articulating the basis for a new government and nation. All of these same activities continued once the war formally began, with the addition of the formation of an actual government and of armies trained to secure independence through military action.
