France. In 1763, the English gained all land to the East of the Mississippi River, and Spain gained all land to the West of the Mississippi River. Because of this Spain lost their colony of Florida to the English. The French land was split between the English and the Spanish. But the Proclamation of 1763 forbade the English settlers from crossing the Appalachain Mountains. So, the English hardly gained any land. They handed their lands West of the Appalachians to the Indians living there.

English settlers had to self govern greatly because most of the people who inhabited America when they arrived had their separate system of culture as their law. English settlers brought common law to America and they adopted that as their law.

The most recent archeological research has them living with the Native Americans inland from where they started. They have found English artifacts within the dig of the village. Everything points to them living there.

Most English settlers thought the natives 'heathen' so avoided them at all costs. They also believed they worshiped the devil because of the colour of their skin, and because many of the first English settlers were Puritan's (who were very God fearing) they truly hated the Indians and would kill them if they thought they were a threat.
