About a quarter of it was acquired by direct conquering. Approximately half of it was bought from the French during the Louisiana Purchase. A section of it was bought from the Russian Empire. The rest was gradually added by people who discovered the land, found nobody else owned it, claimed it as their own and decided to join in the federation.
