South Carolina was disappointed that she did not get the aid of the other Southern states. Although many sympathized with Carolina's stand, they were unwilling to to give open support. Jackson's supporters suggested a compromise tariff, and Jackson gave his consent. Calhoun, who had resigned the VP and taken a seat in the U.S. Senate., was willing to compromise if certain Southern demands were met. Congress adopted the Tariff of 1833 and the Force Bill, which gave the President authority to use the army and navy to enforce revenue laws if necessary. The South Carolina convention reassembled and repealed its ordnance of nullification. At the same time, it nullified the Force Bill, which was now a dead letter since Jackson had no reason to use it.
