St. Louis used to be the west because nobody lived any further west. As people moved farther and farther, the definition of west moved with them. Especially with the California gold rush in 1849, since that's about as far west as anybody could go.

The definition of the West changed from 1800 to 1860 because of the rapid expansion of US territories. The far reaches of the West went from Kentucky to California in this time period.
With the expansion of the western territories, the concept of the term â??westâ?? became much broader between 1800-1860. Following the Louisiana Purchase in 1803, the Texas annexation in 1845, the Oregon country, the Mexican cessation and the Gadsden Purchase, the boundaries seemed endless.
