The southern states justified their use of slavery in many ways. They claimed that White people were superior, and that God had created Blacks below Whites to be used as their slaves. They also said that Black people were ignorant, lazy, and unintelligent and therefore needed to be controlled by White masters. They claimed that they were actually doing the Black people and the economy a favor, by saying that Black people could not support themselves and would become beggars. This reasoning is obviously very flawed and disgusting today, but back then not many questioned it. (White) Children were raised thinking that Blacks below Whites was just natural and correct.

South
Many slaves in the south worked on large plantations
Without slaves the south couldn't trade or have as much business then they had with slaves. The north benefited of this because the south was getting more help in building weapons with slaves then they did alone.
deep south is a place where they sold slaves to make money
State's rights
it was a chance for the slaves to become catholics.
The North had less use for slaves than the South did, and many Northern people helped slaves gain freedom.
Plantation owners supported and propagated racism to justify owning people as slaves.
they would give the slaves a place to sleep
Slave owners justified owning slaves by arguing that slaves were inferior and needed to be controlled for their own benefit. They also used racist ideologies to dehumanize and justify the exploitation of slaves, claiming that it was their "natural" role to serve their masters. Additionally, economic interests played a large role in maintaining the institution of slavery, as it was seen as essential to the profitability of industries like agriculture.
Christianity had little to do with it; like all religions, it is easily suspended when what you desire to do does not equal what the religion desires you do. For slaves, certain interpretations of the Old Testament book Leviticus were perverted in order to justify the ownership of slaves; the same book was easily pervert to justify killing, not only of slaves but also of criminals and outcasts. It is still perverted today to justify homophobia and the murder of gay men and lesbians worldwide.
the slaves in the south were freed by the Emancipation Proclamation.
They believed they had the right to enslave non-Christians.
