Edward "Ned" Wynoop fought in the Civil War, rising to the position of Major (some sources say Lieutenant Colonel). Serving in Kansas and Colorado, he came to a belief that was unique among most white military leaders: he believed the Indians (today called Native Americans) were being treated unfairly. He became committed to ending the fighting between whites and Indians, and he encouraged two constantly warring tribes-- the Cheyenne and Arapahoe-- to enter into a peace treaty. Wynkoop's actions as a mediator and peacemaker reduced violence in the region dramatically during 1865-1866. As a US Indian Agent, he became a passionate supporter of better treatment for the native peoples and advocated for them, which did not make him popular with some of colleagues. I enclose a link to a very thorough article about what he tried to do and whether his efforts were successful.

How were native Americans treated between 1820 and 1840?

i think that (according to my us history test book) the native Americans have been treated badly because they were known as outsiders that no one has known about or has any past about. Many people dispized the native Americans at the time yet of course the native Americans were the people who greeted them onto their land, maybe not fight at first, but eventually, did not even know that they were going to be driven out of their homelands. they were one of the founding people or groups on the Americas and i think that we don't even try to help or recognize it. their are so many things that no one recognizes because of the things around them... no i am not a native American trying to get people to appreciate the natives, i am a person with understanding and tries to see everything in everyones perspective... even when it is really hard at times age 14

What were the feeling of the Native Americans when they had to leave their land?

As you can imagine, they were furious. That's why they had so many wars, you know, to get rid of the English men. But some (very few) believed they should still try to make peace with them, like the legend Pocahontas.
