Americans understood their brave new type of government needed validation and the same kind of tyrannical state they had fought to overthrow could not become a part of the new country. The need for states to listen and respond to the needs of citizens and to avoid another Shayâ??s rebellion. Despite fiery rhetoric addressing the importance of liberty, the United States was a slave holding country with no intention of giving up its slaves. And the best way to address liberty while still remaining a slave owning nation was a conundrum.

Some examples of the US Constitution being a product of it's time are:

  • Article 1, Section 2 (the three/fifths compromise) which stated that slaves counted as 3/5 of a free man
  • The Missouri Compromise which detailed which states could have slavery and which could not
  • The Constitution was written in response to the perceived weaknesses of the Articles of Confederation
