There were arguably eighteen colonies in mainland North America after 1774 and on the eve of Revolution. The original Thirteen Colonies were Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts (to which Maine belonged), and New Hampshire.
