Both. The Union wanted to preserve the country as a whole; they did not want the United States to split up. The Confederacy, however, wanted to separate from the United States, therefore, splitting up the country. So the Union wanted to destroy the confederacy to preserve the United States.
NO...the Confederate States of America only wanted to separate from the Union or northern states and become independent not unlike the American colonies wanted to become independent from Great Britain.

The north was known as the Union. It was the north that did not want the states to be separated.
They felt the Union should be preserved. They felt that, by states leaving the Union, they were violating the agreement that formed the United States, that the rebel secessionists were, in fact, committing treason.

Many Southerners wanted to remain part of the Union. Many others were not willing to stay in the Union if it meant sacrificing what they viewed to be their rights and the rights of their states to make local law. That is what started the US Civil War.

Texas did not want to join the union of the United States. In 1845 when Texas joined the union, it was due to mismanaged finances, and the refusal of the people that were settling in Texas (which used to be a part of Mexico) to abolish slavery.
