In winning it was no longer England's right, place or business to grant freedoms. The colonies won the freedom to self govern and not be obliged to answer to the dictates, laws, rules, taxation or any other control from England. In fact what the colonies got was chaos. No central government to provide for the defense of the new nation. No postal system. No monetary or currency system. In fact the resulting nation was almost totally disfunctional, one states money was worthless any where else. It is more than likely that England expected the colonials to come crawling 'home' begging for forgiveness. It is interesting to note that there was a huge movement to make Gen. George Washington a king. He of course refused and reluctantly served as President for two terms and stepped down setting the stage for the system we know today as term limits. While England reviled George Washington for his role in the revolution, King George was totally impressed when he heard Washington had voluntarily stepped down from power; unheard of in European power politics. The freedoms we have were not granted to us but earned by courageous, generous leaders who looked to the future and were unafraid to set their own personal glory and gains aside to improve the nation for all of us to follow.
