The negro slaves could seek asylum with Federal troops, who declared them "contraband" and gave them shelter and work, and sometimes offered them enlistment. Some slaves also worked for the Confederate side, and were captured by the Federals. A few worked aboard blockade runners or Confederate warships, and jumped ship in foreign ports.
