Robert E. Lee, the general of the Confederate Army, surrendered with his troops to Ulysses S. Grant, the general of the Union (North) Army on April 8th, 1865. As the news of the surrender spread through the Confederacy, obligatorily, the rest of the Confederate troops gradually surrendered.
During this process of gradual surrender from the other Confederate troops, and only 6 days after Robert E. Lee's surrender at Appomattox, President Abraham Lincoln was shot and killed in the Ford Theater.
So basically, the President's assassination did not affect the Civil War because it happened after almost all of the Confederacy had surrendered. There was only one otherConfederate-Union
battle after the President's assassination, and that was the Battle ofPalmito
Ranch on May 12th, 1865. This was a very limited engagement with no real battle tactics whatsoever, and had no affect/influence to the Civil War. The assassination of the President did not affect this battle either, nor did it affect any of the war.
The only affect it had was after the war, during the Reconstruction of the Confederate States, because Andrew Johnson was not exactly what we would call "the best president for that."
