The first british colonists were religious, yes, fundamentalist protestants, Roundheads, but the first few colonies were not founded for religious reasons, it was more a question of getting a slice of the action in the scramble for the New World, even the Spanish who were obsessed with religion still primarily colonize the new world to exploit it and secondly to convert the natives to Roman Catholocism; remember this period from 1492 to 1776 covers the period of the Reformation, Counter-reformation, The European Wars of Religion and finally The Age of Enlightenment. So everything was tainted by religion for some 250 years until finally "reason" prevailed, one could argue the the US was the first essentially secular nation state from its inception. "in god we trust" sounds like a vestige from roundheaded colonial times :)
