Mahas is one of the many versions of the tribal name "Omahas", since early explorers recorded native words as they thought they sounded. The Big Sioux River in Iowa was once called The River of the Mahas.

The tribe's real name was U.mon.hon, meaning "upsteam" and they speak a Siouan language related to Ponca and Quapaw.
