What you have is probably what's now called a Large Cent. These were struck during the period 1793 to 1857, at which time the rising price of copper forced the Mint to downsize the coin to its current dimensions.
However, to ID your coin you'll have to provide more information. Please post a new question with the coin's date and a description of the reverse side where it says ONE CENT. There were many design changes, sometimes during the course of a single year, so it can be difficult to ID a Large Cent just by its date.
To clear things up, the coin is actually closer in size to a half dollar, and the denomination is commonly called a penny. "Penney" is a department store, LOL.
