He wanted to bring an end to slavery.
In the period before and during the US Civil War , a person who wanted to end slavery was called an Abolitionist - because he or she was in favor of the abolition of slavery. A good example of an abolitionist is Abraham Lincoln in America, but in England, William Wilberforce was one of the major abolitionists.Although Lincoln was personally against slavery he was not an abolitionist. An abolitionist wanted to end slavery all at once as an of the government. Lincoln saw no solution to the slavery problem and worked for keeping the UNion whole as his priority.
The Abolitionists.
Abolitionists, were people who wanted to end slavery in western Europe and the Americas. Its origins were in the UK and spread to the USA and Canada. The Northern states of the US were in favour of abolishing slavery the Southern states were not. This led to the American Civil War.
The civil war is more US history because the whole country was at war. The northern states wanted slavery to end. The southern states wanted slavery to thrive.
The group of US citizens named the antislavery abolitionists wanted to end slavery in the United States. This group of great influence believed that slavery was wrong and contradicted the Declaration of Independence.
They were trying to end slavery altogether, though this did not look hopeful, as the Abolitionists were vocal but not very numerous. Meanwhile their objectives were to ban any new slave-states in the Western territories. This would have meant the South being increasingly out-voted in Congress, which would pass laws hostile to Southern interests. It was this quarrel that led to the Civil War. And it was the war - not Abolitionist debate - that led to the end of slavery.
