During the beginning to the middle of the nineteenth century the American and Native relationships had virtually broken down. The Indians who had not assimilated had been forced westward. After the civil war the "poor savages" gained a lot of sympathy in the east. This was no surprise as the east coast had long since forced the Indian out of their regions. They could afford to be charitable. Towards the end of the century, sympathy had swayed much of the eastcoast to the Indian side after atrocities committed during the Massacre of Sand Creek and later, the Massacre of Wounded Knee became well known.
