as far as I remember American history it was the pilgrims
In the spring of 1621, the Pilgrims met two Native Americans, Squanto and Samoset, who, to the Pilgrims' surprise, spoke English. Samoset had learned English from traders, and Squanto had learned it in England, where he had been a prisoner. These two Native Americans offered a peace pact on behalf of the Wampanoag leader Massasoit. They believed that the Pilgrims could be useful allies and signed a treaty in 1621.
It was not until March 16/26, some three months after the Pilgrims arrived, that a tall Indian walked boldly into the plantation crying out, "Welcome! Welcome, Englishmen!" The Pilgrims were startled when the Indian named Samoset introduced himself to the Pilgrims in English. Samoset, an Abnaki Indian from Maine, had been kidnapped by explorers and taken to England
Samoset was the first Native American Indian to talk with the colonists. He boldly strolled through their encampment and introduced himself on March 16, 1621.
The first Thanksgiving took place in Plymouth, Massachusetts with the English settlers breaking bread with the local Native American tribes. At the time Bradford was the governor of the colony.
Check that coin again. There was no such thing as a dollar (or the United States) in 1621.

Samoset - On March 16, 1621, Samoset was the first Native American to make contact with the Pilgrims. After spending the night with the Pilgrims, he came back two days later with Squanto, who spoke English much better than Samoset. Tisquantum (better known as Squanto) was a Patuxet. He was the Native American who assisted the Pilgrims after their first winter in the New World and was integral to their survival.
Squanto helped the Pilgrims survive wynter in 1621
The Pilgrims first met Squanto in March 1621 when he approached their settlement at Plymouth. Squanto had been living with the Wampanoag tribe and spoke English, which enabled him to communicate and help the Pilgrims establish peaceful relations with the Native Americans in the area.

Nothing bad happened, the Pilgrims befriended a native American named Squanto who acted as a translator between the Pilgrims and natives. In the Fall of 1621, the Pilgrims shared a feast with the Pokanokets. This meal is reason why Thanksgiving is celebrated.
