US President Thomas Jefferson believed that by purchasing what became known as the Louisiana Purchase he would vastly increase the size of the US. He believed the cost was a good deal and it gave the US control of the City of New Orleans. The deal was made, through representatives, between Jefferson and Napoleon Bonaparte, who was, at the time, effectively the ruler of France. However, Jefferson's and others' belief that the Purchase was unconstitutional took a back seat to fears of European powers' (at the time, primarily France's) establishing colonies in North America.
