Pioneers mostly used animals as their main means of travel on the Oregon Trail. They stopped to rest at Fort Walla Walla in the 1840s.
The trail that settlers took to reach Portland, Oregon, from the Oregon Trail was the Barlow Road. It branched off from the main Oregon Trail near The Dalles and provided a more direct route to the Willamette Valley, including the future site of Portland.

When I took the DMV driving test in Dallas, Oregon, we took a drive thru town on Main street, once around the Polk County Courthouse block and then back to the DMV office out on Ellendale Ave. They may have changed the route thru the years, though.

The main route to Multnomah Falls (in the Columbia Gorge) from either direction is Interstate 84; the city of Troutdale is almost exactly 15 miles west of Multnomah Falls via this route.
