The Republican Party. In general blacks voted for the Republicans, the "Party of Lincoln" until Franklin Roosevelt in 1932. Then blacks changed their allegiance to the Democratic Party, and have voted Democratic since.

What did the period of reconstruction mean to the South?

The Reconstruction Era in the South had a different meaning than the Republican view, as the Republican Party created most of the reconstruction laws and policies. Their idea was to reform the old Confederacy and have it blend in, at whatever the cost with the rest of the Union. The Southern view saw reconstruction from a different point of view. To the "Old South", reconstruction meant that former slaves and other minorities would have equal rights with ones held by white people. This for them was not correct as they believed that Blacks were not equal to Whites. The idea of having Freed slaves take part in the governments of the southern states, allow them to vote and own farms was against the southern point of view.

During Reconstruction which political party was supported by the Ku Klux Klan and the White League?

During Reconstruction, the Ku Klux Klan and the White League primarily supported the Democratic Party. These groups sought to resist the Reconstruction efforts and maintain white supremacy, often using violence and intimidation against African Americans and their allies, who were typically aligned with the Republican Party. Their actions were aimed at undermining Republican control and restoring Democratic power in the South.

Who were the scalawags and carpetbagggers?

Scalawags were Southern whites who supported Reconstruction and the Republican Party after the Civil War, often viewed as traitors by their fellow Southerners. Carpetbaggers were Northerners who moved to the South during Reconstruction, seeking economic opportunities or political power, often perceived as exploiting the region's turmoil. Both groups played significant roles in the political landscape of the post-war South, though they faced considerable hostility from many local communities. Their legacies remain contentious in discussions about Reconstruction's impact and the South's recovery.

What role did scalawags and carpetbaggers play in reconstruction?

During reconstruction a shortage of competent local people existed to run the government. Southerners who had sided with the North in the Civil War knew local issues and knew the local troublemakers. These local people also wanted to put through the program of equality of black and white people demanded by the United States Government. Without them around, the former Confederate solders would be able to use intimidation to keep the newly freed black people in slavery. While de jure slavery was impossible, de facto slavery remained a possibility so long as no one recognized its existence. The scalawags recognized its existence. Of course the Scalawags had their own agenda. The blacks would vote Republican and keep the Scalawags in office. To keep the blacks voting, the Scalawags had to keep the former Confederate solders from intimidating them.(We have seen a similar phenomena in the South in voting patterns. The Blacks and the Republicans in the South cooperated to do away with run off primaries. As a result instead of the middle of the road candidate winning the Democrat primary, the most liberal wins. This has meant the liberals and Blacks have taken over the Democrat Party. The Right Wing has taken over the Republican Party. The same people as provided the South with the Scalawags have taken over the Republican Party. They did it by cooperating with the Blacks.

Was the loyal league an extension of the Democratic Party?

The Loyal League was not an extension of the Democratic Party; rather, it was a group formed during the Reconstruction Era primarily by African Americans and some white allies to advocate for civil rights and political participation. Established in the 1860s, the Loyal League aimed to promote loyalty to the Union and support for the Republican Party, which was then associated with abolition and civil rights for freed slaves. While it sought to empower African Americans politically, it operated independently from the Democratic Party, which often opposed such progressive reforms during that time.

What did the southerns do during reconstruction?

THE southerners were the defeated ones. They were at the mercy of the federal government. The leaders all lost their vote . Blacks and carpetbaggers ruled. The old plantations could not make a living with hired labor and were broken up and sold for taxes. Secret organizations gained some power with terrorist tactics over the blacks. A new Democratic party formed and it gradually gained power, finally winning the presidency in 1884 after reconstruction ended.
