Savannah Georgia
Sherman chose not to destroy Savannah during his "March to the Sea" in 1864 primarily because he recognized the city's strategic importance as a port and supply center for the Confederacy. Instead, he aimed to capture the city to demonstrate the Union's strength and to encourage further surrender of Confederate forces. Additionally, he believed that preserving Savannah would be beneficial for the post-war recovery of the South. His decision was also influenced by the desire to minimize suffering for civilians and to facilitate a smoother transition to peace.

Atlanta was captured by William T. Sherman - but it was not actually his task to do so. Sherman was told to forget about capturing territory and simply destroy the Army of Tenessee, wherever he found it. When that army escaped from Atlanta, Sherman was not confident of being able to pursue and destroy it in difficult mountain terrain while his supply-line was so vulnerable. Instead, he decided to occupy (and largely destroy) Atlanta, before embarking on his March to the Sea, where he could live off the land and forget his supply-line.
Sherman burned down Atlanta before starting his March to the Sea.
Union General William Tecumseh Sherman famously burned Atlanta, Georgia, to the ground during his March to the Sea in 1864. This military strategy aimed to destroy the Confederacy's war resources and morale. Sherman's campaign not only targeted military targets but also civilian infrastructure to hasten the end of the Civil War. The destruction of Atlanta was a significant turning point in the conflict.

Hood and the Confederates were simply trying to keep Sherman out, and save their city. Sherman was trying to give the North a psychological boost by capturing a big, symbolic prize in the shape of Atlanta. This would compensate for his failure to destroy Hood's army, which managed to escape after the city fell.
The main city captured by Sherman was Atlanta.
Nobody. Grant was not interested in capturing territory. He just wanted to destroy the enemy. Sherman's orders were to destroy the Army of Tennessee, wherever it might be. When that army retreated into Atlanta, Sherman decided to capture the city, as a morale-raising story that would help Lincoln's re-election campaign. The Army of Tennessee did, however, escape. That was when Sherman decided on his new plan to make punitive raids on the Georgia farmland, and try to starve the Confederacy into surrender. This was the opposite of what Grant had ordered, but fortunately Sherman carried high credibility with Grant, who eventually endorsed the plan.
Sherman aimed to destroy buildings of military importance, but ended up burning down most of the city, leaving many refugees to flee into the mountains.
